We Are Actually Traveling Michigan
The whole point of Michigan Explorer is to actually go to these places, not sit at home rewording tourism brochures.
We go. We drive there. We hike it. We camp there. We get eaten alive by mosquitoes. We take the wrong road. We realize we forgot something important about 90 miles from home.
Then we come back and tell you what actually happened. If a place is awesome, I'll tell you. If it's overrated, I'll tell you. If the road in looks like something your car has no business being on, I'll definitely tell you. And if you need bug spray, I'll mention it roughly six times. Consider this the first.
The Kids Are Not Just Along For The Ride
My daughter, Hallie, handles filming, editing, social media, trip planning, and the creative side of everything. My son, Atticus, helps pick places, films, comes up with ideas, and provides the very important ruling on whether something is actually fun.
That last part matters. Adults will stand in front of a historical marker for 20 minutes saying, "Wow, this is fascinating." Atticus will tell you the truth: "This is boring. Can we go see the waterfall?" That's useful information. Between the three of us, we usually get a pretty good read on whether somewhere is worth your gas money.
We Are Trying To See All Of It
The goal is basically to explore as much of Michigan as humanly possible. Waterfalls. Campgrounds. Beaches. Lighthouses. Small towns. State parks. Roadside attractions. Hiking trails. Weird places. Famous places. Places that somehow never make anybody's "Top 10 Things To Do In Michigan" list.
If it looks interesting, there's a good chance we're going. Sometimes that means a perfectly planned weekend. Sometimes it means I see something on a map at 10:30 at night and decide we apparently need to drive across the state.
We Are Learning As We Go
We are not professional travelers, which is probably half the fun. We decided to start camping without knowing much of anything about camping. We bought a tent, packed the car, went to a rustic campground, and figured it out when we got there.
That's pretty much our approach to all of this. Go somewhere. Try it. Figure out what we did wrong. Do it better next time. Hopefully save you from making the same mistake.
Why Michigan?
Because Michigan is ridiculous. You can live here for decades and still keep finding places you've never heard of: hundreds of waterfalls, miles of shoreline, tiny towns, huge forests, sand dunes, islands, shipwrecks, and some of the clearest water you'll ever see.
Then you cross the Mackinac Bridge and it feels like a completely different state. I keep finding places and thinking, "How did I not know this was here?" That's a big part of why this site exists.
This Is A Family Project More Than Anything Else
The website's great. The photos are great. The videos are great. But the best part is getting to do all of this with my kids, and I'm very aware they won't stay these ages forever. Life gets busier. Jobs happen. College happens. Families happen. Getting everybody into a car on a random Friday night to go sleep in a tent next to a river gets a lot harder.
So we're doing it now. Taking the trips. Driving too far. Stopping at random places. Eating questionable road trip food. Taking way too many pictures. Building something together. Michigan Explorer is basically the record of all of it.
How We Build the Map
Not every pin on our interactive map is a place we've been yet. The map is built from hundreds of researched Michigan destinations, pulled from official sources like the DNR, park and museum websites, and other public listings, so you can see what's out there even before we get to it. The places with a photo and a full write-up are the ones we've actually visited and can speak to firsthand. We're working through the rest one trip at a time.
What I Hope You Get From This Site
I hope Michigan Explorer helps you find somewhere you didn't know existed: a waterfall you've never seen, a weekend idea for your own kids, or a whole Upper Peninsula itinerary built from places you found here. Or maybe you read about one of our trips and decide to get in the car and go somewhere.
That's really the whole point. You don't need a perfect vacation or a giant budget. Sometimes you just need a free weekend, a full tank of gas, and somebody willing to say, "Sure. Let's go see what's over there." That's how most of our trips start.
Welcome to Michigan Explorer. We've still got a whole lot of Michigan left to screw around and discover.
